Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal has become a very popular procedure as it is a quick and effective method in achieving hair growth reduction in all areas of the body. Research suggests that the effectiveness of laser hair removal is often dependent upon the skill and experience of the clinician as well as the type of technology used in performing the procedure. Dr. Stephen Baker and Dionne Laslo-Baker, Ph.D. Candidate have extensively investigated which technology offers the best results with least discomfort.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Light from the laser is absorbed by dark pigment (melanin) in our skin. The light emitted from the laser selectively heats the root of the hair follicle that causes hair growth while not heating the rest of the skin. Laser hair removal works best on brown or black hair colour.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Typically individuals require between 5-8 sessions for optimal permanent hair removal. The sessions should be spaced 3 - 4 weeks apart for facial hair, while other areas on the body such as the legs should be spaced 8 - 12 weeks apart for each treatment.
Will the Treatment Hurt?
The treatment feels similar to a hot elastic band quickly snapping on the face. Many patients report minimal discomfort, a topical anesthetic can be applied to aid in maximal comfort during the procedure.
How Long Does Each Session Take?
This will depend on the area of the body being treated. A typical treatment on the upper lip and chin area takes approximately ten minutes and can be performed over a lunch break.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Many people experience minimal or no side effects and make-up can be applied immediately following treatment. Some patients may experience mild redness or swelling around the area treated which should not last more than a few days. Applying ice or cooling packs to the area immediately following treatment can relieve side effects.
